Biography
Anne van de Star is a Brussels-based sound artist, composer, and sound designer. Her practice moves between contemporary dance, theatre, electronic music, audiovisual performance, and sound installation. She works from sound as matter: something that moves through space, affects the body, and emerges from an interplay of physical and technical processes. Through sampling, synthesis, and deconstruction, she investigates how sound, structures, and systems can be taken apart and reorganised, and how sound as musical, dramaturgical, and spatial material shapes meaning and experience.
Van de Star collaborates with choreographers and theatre makers such as Mette Ingvartsen, Cherish Menzo, Jozef Wouters, Katja Dreyer, Guus Diepenmaat, and Anouk Friedli, in roles ranging from composition and sound design to sound scenography, live performance, and technical realisation. With productions such as The Dancing Public and Skatepark by Mette Ingvartsen, Killed and Extended Darlings: Subtle Whine by Cherish Menzo, and The Latecomers by Jozef Wouters and ANGRYBODIES by Guus Diepenmaat and Anouk Friedli, she has contributed to productions presented internationally.
Since 2016 she has also formed, together with violinist Hester Bolle, MONOMONO / IIIOIIOIIIOIIO, an electro-acoustic multimedia project in which electronic composition, sound art, acoustic instruments, and rhythmic structures come together. In parallel, since 2014 she has developed an independent practice of performances, sound installations, and releases.
